Good Morning, Beautiful

27 Dec

It seems we Shedds always have “fun” stories to tell around the holidays. Where do these stories come from? Who knows. No one can predict the things that happen to us…it just, well, happens. I had fully anticipated that my post-Christmas blog would be about Christmas day, gifts, family time, etc. It is…but there’s more to it than that.

Let me tell you a story…

Christmas day was a smaller scaled event this year. We stayed up until 4 AM wrapping gifts the previous night/early morning. Well, I took a brief five hour nap…awoke at 2:45 AM and started my wrapping. Haha!

We didn’t get up until some time between 9:30 AM and 10 AM. We had coffee and opened gifts. Later we watched Elf and then Sarah and I ran some errands (i.e. depositing Christmas gifts, hehe). We took the purple skittle – that’s the ’98 Dodge Neon for you newbies. I get a little more nervous each time I ride in that thing. Anyway, after our errands, we sat and talked outside our parents house for a long while before going back inside.

Once back inside, we found Mom and Dad watching old home movies. That’s right, they were watching our first documented family vacation, April of 1988. We hit all of the historical sites of Kentucky. I was surprised to see two six year olds and an eight year so well-behaved at Shaker Village. Well, we had our moments, but overall I was impressed. I was even more impressed with my 34-year-old father! Apparently, he and I liked to play tag. I wasn’t very good.

After memory lane, it was time to start dinner. We took a few short cuts this year…which turned out to be beautiful…less work is always beautiful. And, the food was really good! We were going to watch more home movies after dinner, but I ended up reading my new book, Debt-free Living instead. Then Tyler called to wish all a Merry Christmas, oh and confirm that they had arrived safely (sans luggage) in Adelaide. I got to talk to both Tyler and Katrina, which was fun. Then Sarah and I watched the first episode, season three of Grey’s Anatomy. By the time that was over, it was about 1 AM. We were exhausted!

That next morning I awoke to the sound of my Dad’s voice. He was saying something to my mom…something about our cars being hit in the night. I was thinking minor scratches on the driver sides of our cars. We had parked in front of the house…on a dead-end street…in a quiet, somewhat affluent neighborhood. Sarah yelled downstairs saying that as long as she still had her side-view mirror, she’d be fine. Dad laughed and said…”um, Sarah, your car is toast.”

I quickly hopped out of bed, ran downstairs and out the front door only to be met by shock and disbelief. My jaw immediately fell open…the right hand landed on top of my head. I didn’t even realize that my socked-feet were wet and freezing. Here’s what I saw…(I didn’t want to spoil the surprise so I put the pictures on a different page…hehehe, just click on the links)…

A kiss from Sarah

Sarah’s rear

Sarah’s rear has wings

Sarah’s car was crumpled like an accordion. Her trunk was in her back seat! My car suffered only minor injuries, compared to Sarah’s. The impact pushed both of our cars an entire car length forward. I even had my emergency break on. I can’t help but wonder just how fast the guilty party was going…or how intoxicated the driver was. There was enough fluid on the ground to assume the driver busted his/her own radiator. And, after pulling the cars apart, we discovered part of a black fender, along with a Mitsubishi emblem.

Um, oops.

We also have the headlight casing with an ID number on it. I’m confident justice will be served. :-)

Like I said before, my car wasn’t too bad. It’s still drivable (as far as I can tell). I have a giant hole in my bumper…and I lost some tread on my tires. Other damage will be discovered later today when I drop it off at the collision center.

Sarah was supposed to head back to Taylor University yesterday at noon. Needless to say, she didn’t exactly depart on time. However, the good news is that Dad had a company car that Sarah could use – a Daewoo! We heard from Sarah last night. She arrived back on campus, safely. However, she was a little confused when it was time to leave the gym. She forgot she wasn’t looking for her purple skittle. Sigh. For the last ten years and 100,000 miles, that car served us well. May its parts live on in other trusty vehicles for years to come.

Goodbye Purple Skittle

Hopefully we’ll catch the person responsible for this. I will be disappointed if we don’t…not because I will otherwise have to cover the cost of repairs…but, because in all likelihood this was a young person who had too much to drink and got behind the wheel of a car. Chances are he or she will be a repeat offender. This time, we were lucky. No one was in the car(s). Next time may have a different ending.

Merry Christmas!

22 Dec

Dear Family and Friends,

So, do you like the blog option for a Christmas letter? I was proud of my resourcefulness. Ha! What do you think of the Christmas theme? Nice? Okay, on with the letter…

For the second year in a row, I’ve missed my deadline for sending Christmas cards. As some of you know, I like to send my cards out the weekend that follows Thanksgiving. Today is December 22. Oops. It’s been a recent realization that the talk about time going faster the older you get isn’t just something that old people say. It’s really true. Between family time, a job transition and moving, I hardly had time to eat!

Tyler and his wife, Katrina, arrived back in the states with Ella (my favorite niece) in tow, last December. I didn’t realize how much I had missed them until they returned. Oh, and having a niece was a fun, new experience, as well. They spent the entire year in Kentucky. On December 11, they left for London. After which, they’ll head back to Australia and then on to China. Though it was sad to see them leave, I know that their desire to spread the Good News to the people of China will be greatly rewarded.

My professional path has seen a lot of change this past year, as well. New West kept me very busy the first half of the year. I got to travel to Orlando and Las Vegas for events. Though tiring, it afforded me the chance to get to know some of my co-workers a little better. It was opportunities like these that made my decision to leave New West a very painful one.

This past June, I joined DBS>Interactive as their new Director of Client Services. DBS is an interactive agency that works strictly in Web (design, development, marketing, etc.). We can do anything that happens through a browser (I wonder if a statement like that adds any clarity). The past six months have certainly had its share of challenges, but challenges are what cause us to grow. So I can’t complain!

The job transition was not my only major change this year. The lease to my apartment was up in August! So, after much prayer and consideration…and a little help from my brother…I decided to move. A friend of Tyler’s was moving to Tennessee and having trouble selling his home in J-town. Tyler mentioned that I was in the market. Everything seemed to work out perfectly. I moved in Labor Day weekend.

At the end of October, I had a friend move in with me. I had the space and the house was somewhat lonely with just me and Jake occupying it. Again the situation seemed to work out perfectly.

Well, that about covers all the major events of this past year. Who knows what this next year will look like!! I hope this past year went well for each of you! I look forward to keeping in touch!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

What a Day!

17 Dec

You know, I should know better than having eight hundred meetings on a Monday. Well, to my credit, I didn’t schedule them all. It made for a marathon day. In fact, I didn’t even have time to eat. Don’t you feel sorry for me?

…well, you shouldn’t. Things are so exciting at work, right now. We have lots of new business coming in our doors. We’re just trying to keep up! It’s so much fun to have the freedom to say, “sure, I’d love to work with you.” Or, “no, you’re not the type of client we’re looking for.” Not that I say either of those to anyone…but the freedom is there.

Another big day tomorrow! At least I don’t have as many meetings…just a presentation for a project that I’m ridiculously proud of! I can’t wait!!

My Coffee Addiction

15 Dec

Every morning I am faced with a monumental decision. Do I have time for coffee?

I realize that to some the word “monumental” may seem to be a bit over the top. Well, it’s not and here’s why…

Every morning, I intentionally set my alarm earlier than necessary, so I will have time to get up, make my coffee and then drink it. However, there have been mornings where I oversleep. Okay, there a lot of mornings where I oversleep. In comes that critical…yes, monumental…question. Do I have time for coffee?

Well, let’s look at my options.

Option A) Forgo coffee and get to work on time.

The Results: In my haste to get ready and out the door, I don’t notice my tiredness. It doesn’t usually hit me until the Cannons Lane exit on I64. I slowly start to feel the fatigue that’s overtaking my entire body. My concentration dwindles. And then, only by the grace of God do I get to work safely. Once I’m at work, my colleagues become victims of my own withdraw.

I’m unable to concentrate on one topic…well, any topic. I cannot articulate my minimal thoughts. My inability to think frustrates me. I then vomit my frustration on everyone around me. By mid-morning the headache sets in. My headaches are so intense, they make me nauseous. My mood is worsened. Do you see the downward cycle?

By lunch I have to get caffeine. But, I have no energy to go out. I have to fight it. With the help of my motivated co-workers, I make it out to lunch. I consume large quantities of diet coke and usually swing by Starbuck’s on the way back to the office.

After lunch I’m energized, my headache is gone and I don’t stop talking (even if I’m the only one in the room).

Option B) Ignore the time, make my coffee (3.5 cups that fit nicely into my giant coffee mug) and drink my coffee. Arrive late to work.

The Results: As I drive to work, I listen to the radio and sing every song that crosses my air waves. I graciously allow the giant TARC that owns the road that waits until the absolute last minute to merge into my lane. I walk from the garage to my office, greeting everyone I see with a smile and a “good morning.” Once inside, though late, I cheerfully greet my friends. I’m excited about the day and full of ideas for my early morning meetings.

The morning zooms by. At lunch, I drink water. After which, I head back to the office, free of any detours. Do you realize how much money I just saved? After lunch, I conquer the world.

Option C) Forgo the coffee and get to work on time. Drink the office coffee.

The Results: This is what I call an unachievable scenario. The office coffee is not an option. No office coffee is…it’s just as bad as gas station coffee. I don’t want to drink something that is SO intentionally hot, it prevents people from tasting it. Gross! Yes, I’m a coffee snob.

So, it’s between Option A and B. Which option do you think I should go with? Option B is the obvious choice. I better be mindful when scheduling client meetings in the morning…nothing before 9AM!

Yet Another Blog

11 Dec

Okay, this is the last time I will make a switch. I promise! I liked the look of the other blog. BUT, I just didn’t have the features that I wanted. For example, with this blog, you may subscribe to my RSS! What’s that? RSS stands for “really simple syndication”. It’s a way of being alerted when I’ve posted yet another profoundly engaging post. Email me if you have questions, haha!

…I have good news, though. I was able to import my blogspot blog!! Yes!!  If only I could import Xanga.  Oh well.
